Agitation in the ICU: part one Anatomical and physiologic basis for the agitated state
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction The term ‘agitation’ describes a syndrome of excessive motor activity, usually nonpurposeful and associated with internal tension. For intensivists, agitation is not so much a diagnosis, but a consequence of more fundamental etiologies that, when expressed, result in disquietude. Agitation is important in the intensive care unit (ICU) because it can alter the diagnosis and course of medical treatment. It can cloud the etiology of underlying disease processes like a smoke screen, making effective diagnosis difficult or impossible. It may result in the inability of the patient to cooperate with monitoring and therapeutics that requires them to lie relatively still and quiet. Treatment of agitation without considering underlying causation gives the false impression of wellness when in reality end-organ damage is occurring either as a result of agitation itself, or as a result of exacerbation of underlying pathology.

Life-threatening brain failure and agitation in the intensive care unit
The modern intensive care unit (ICU) has evolved into an area where mortality and morbidity can be reduced by identification of unexpected hemodynamic and ventilatory decompensations before long-term problems result. Because intensive care physicians are caring for an increasingly heterogeneous population of patients, the indications for aggressive monitoring and close titration of care have ex...
متن کاملStudies of Drop Behavior and Prediction of Sauter Mean Drop Diameter in Various Rotary Agitated Extraction Columns
Knowledge of droplet behavior is one of the most important criteria for determination of mass transfer kinetics for choosing the type of liquid-liquid extraction columns. Mean drop size data of dispersed phase droplets in continuous phase have been obtained for Various Rotary Agitated Liquid-Liquid Extraction Columns . The effects of operational variables such as mass transfer directions with a...
متن کاملManagement of the agitated intensive care unit patient.
Agitation: 1. Violent motion. 2. Strong or tumultuous emotion. Management of the agitated patient is fast becoming an area of major breakthroughs for critical care medicine. To illustrate, Figure 1 shows the total number of articles found on MEDLINE using a combination of search words related to sedation and critical care. This crude survey demonstrates an exponential rise in activity surroundi...
متن کاملPolygalacturonase Production by Aspergillus sp. in Air-Lift and Agitated Fermentor
Polygalacturonase production under different shear stress environments by Aspergillus sp. was studied. It was found that the rate of enzyme production in the stirred tank fermentor decreased with increasing the stirrer speed in the range 300-750 rpm. On the other hand, in a split cylinder air-lift fermentor, the rate of polygalacturonase production slightly increased with increasing in air ...
متن کاملClinical review: Agitation and delirium in the critically ill – significance and management
Agitation is a psychomotor disturbance characterized by a marked increase in motor and psychological activity in a patient. It occurs very frequently in the intensive care setting. It may be isolated, or accompanied by other mental disorders, such as severe anxiety and delirium. Frequently, agitation is a sign of brain dysfunction and, as such, may have adverse consequences, for at least two re...
